PART IX:
For part nine, I bring you a portion story published by the Independent
Eye online news website [http://indeye.org/?p=4236]. Read it:
One of the Liberians listed by the
Government of Liberia as most wanted for allegedly being responsible for the
murder of seven United Nations troops of the Nigerian Contingent assigned in
la’ Cote de voire, Mr. Amos Chayee has reacted sharply to the allegation.
In an exclusive interview with the
Independent Eye News (IEN), via his cell phone from the Bujumbura Refugee Camp
in Ghana, Mr. Chayee exclaimed, “The Government of Liberia (GOL) lied on
me.”
“This news is very shocking to me.
I have never let this camp since I fled to Ghana to seek refuge. I am really
confused about this because I along with my family have been at this refugee
camp since 2002.”
“How possible could it have been
for me to be here at the Bujumbura Refugee Camp and at the same time be in the
Tai area near the Liberian Ivorian border, let alone be involved in the murder
of UN troops?” He asked.
Mr. Chayee, who sounded very
frustrated explained, “I first got the news about my alleged involvement in the
murder of U.N troops, when I got a call from Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County that
the Government of Liberia has been broadcasting my name as one of the most
wanted men.”
“That was news to me because I was
en-route back to the Bujumbura Refugee Camp, after escorting his wife to the
Kotoka International Air Port in Accra, Ghana. My family was bound for
Liberia on a United Nations’ chartered flight as part of the repatriation
process of Liberian refugees.
What would have happened to me if I
were on that flight as well?” He asked. “Maybe I would have been sitting in
jail for nothing.” He predicted.
He alleged “my family is being
harassed by Government security forces since their arrival in the Liberian
capital, Monrovia on Monday, June 14.” He added, “with this kind of situation
unfolding in our country, I am even afraid to return home.”
Mr. Chayee further narrated that
upon hearing the news about his alleged involvement, he called the Government
owned Radio Station, the Liberia Broadcasting System (LBS) and granted an
interview where he again categorically denied his involvement.
He said he told the LBS journalist
who interviewed him when asked about his knowledge about the involvement of any
Liberian said, I have no knowledge” but added by advising, “even if Liberians
were involved in the Ivorian conflict, they should abandon their quest.”
He however indicated,“ Even if
Liberians were involved and they succeeded in overthrowing the Ivorian
Government, they cannot install a Liberian as President of that country. “ He
emphasized conclusively.
Now, what do you think this has
done to Mr. Chayee and the rest of other Grand Gedeans living in refugee camps
preparing to be repatriated? The government has created fears in the heart of
the people. That is intimidation, harassment, and that is witch-hunting.
