Liberian Government Honors James Debbah

Liberia’s most celebrated star, James Salinsa Debbah was on last Wednesday, July 25, 2012 honored as Knight Commander of the Humane Order of African Redemption at this year Investiture Ceremony in commemoration of the Independence Day Celebrations by Her Excellency, Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf on behalf of the Republic of Liberia and the Grand Master of the Orders of Distinction for his immense contributions to the sports, (specifically football) over the years.

This year edition of the Investiture Ceremony, (a program held every year during the Independence Day festival to confer distinctions on special citizens of Liberia and distinguished personalities from all walks of life), was held in the C. Cecil Dennis, Jr. Auditorium at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Monrovia.

Speaking after the ceremony, the former professional footballer extended his heartfelt thanks and appreciations to the Liberian government for such an honor bestowed upon him and promised to continue his efforts in contributing to the quest for an improvement in the Liberian football sector. He also took the time to thank all Liberians for their enormous supports during his entire soccer sojourn.

Other individuals were also honored with different distinctions, joining the list of other special citizens who were honored in the same manner in the past.

Debbah was born in Monrovia on December 14, 1967. He began his professional football career with traditional club, Mighty Barolle in 1984. In 1989, he left Liberia for Union Douala of Cameroon, where he played for only a season and moved on to France in 1990 to French side Olympique Alès. In 1991, Debbah moved up to the Ligue 1 club, AS Monaco and played the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup finals.

A year later, he moved to Olympique Lyonnais. In 1995, Salinsa moved across French Ligue 1 to OGC Nice, where he played until 1997. In that year, Debbah moved to the Belgian League side, R.S.C. Anderlecht but later moved back to Ligue 1 for one season with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). He played for PSG for some times and moved on to Turkish Super League side, Ankaragücü for the 1998 and 1999 seasons; afterward, he moved on to Iraklis in Greece.

After a short spell with Iraklis, Debbah moved to Al-Jazeera Club in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, where he played from 2001–2003, and then moved on to Muharraq Club and played from 2003–2004 in Muharraq, Bahrain. Four years after leaving Muharraq Club, he moved on to the Indonesian Super League side, PKT Bontang for only one season. After a while, he resigned from both national and club football.
